“The mind of the sage appreciates proverbs, and an attentive ear is the joy of the wise.” Sirach 3

August 29, 2010 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

This reading regards humility.  One can never believe that he or she in and of themselves has all knowledge.
Humility is the conclusion of the mind that truth is from the outside and that all circumstances will bring it to one if one is willing to listen.
The sage realizes that he still has more to learn.  In fact, he is where he is precisely because of being open to more about life than he possessed.
The joy of the wise is an attentive ear because no matter how wise she is, she knows that another voice may bring her a new way to think.  If she speaks all the time herself, the ear is let to be used another day.

From Our Pastor

Spiritual Warfare Conference Coming Soon
St. Peter’s Church is bringing Fr. John Caropi, whom you may know from his past years of preaching and teaching on EWTN.  This will take place in the Qwest Center on Saturday, Sept 11.  There is a fee to get in the gate.  It is a one-day conference with doors opening at 8:00 AM.  Morning prayer at 9:00 AM with Archbishop Lucas.  Father will give four talks during the day on Spiritual Warfare and the battle for souls.
The day ends at 5:00 pm with evening prayer.  Any profits go to the restoration project at St Peter’s Church.
I hope many of you take advantage of this rare opportunity to gather with faithful Catholics in such a large venue.  It would also be a great idea, even though it cost a few bucks, to buy a ticket for someone who is in a search for God but whom you think is open to changing their life and pursuing what is true and good.

School Has Started Again
All Saints School has begun fall classes.  I teach fifth and sixth grade religion each Thursday morning after the Communion Service at St. Joseph’s Tower.  Please pray for all the children beginning their education year.

What’s Cookin’ in the Kitchen
The walls in the rectory have been re-plastered as needed and room re-painted white.  The tiles of the floor should go in Monday and Tuesday.  Hopefully the cabinets will get in later in the week.  Next week the backsplash should go in completing most of the job.  Thanks to those who are keeping things moving.  I’ll do a complete thank you at the end of the project.

Adrienne Gould Funeral Monday (Wake Sunday 6 pm)
Adrienne was a resident of St. Joseph’s Villa for 18 years.  She lived at the Villa longer than any other resident.  She was a simple, sweet soul which reminded everyone who met her that the love of God surrounds all those who are willing to receive it.  And when it surrounds them, those who are near to them are blessed by it.  Adrienne used to slip a candy bar to me every once in a while.  And she dealt with all that life had put upon her with an innocent smile, shrug and resolution that the God above was her friend.
I will always remember Adrienne as one of the pleasures of my priesthood.  Perhaps, one day, I will be able to thank her in person. Would that I pray.

Requests for Prayers Being Accepted.
One of our parishioners, Laura Wilson, is willing to offer extended prayers for any intention.  Laura loves to pray and offers many hours of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in our church.  Although we have an active prayer line headed by Deanna Pierre, I have suggested that Laura accept intentions during her prayer time.
Please write down prayer requests, especially for those with a lack of faith, beginning next week in the back of the Church.  The Lord hears the cry of the poor.

Buffett Funds Abortions

In addition to donations that helped create the now common pills that cause abortion and the lawsuit to overturn the Nebraska partial-birth abortion ban, the New York Times reported in an article, “The New Abortion Providers,” on July 12, 2010 that most of the donations from the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, funded by Warren Buffet, “goes to abortion and contraception advocacy and research.”  In adition, the Foundation is funding fellowships at medical schools for abortion training of residents.
