April 13, 2008 Fourth Sunday of Easter

“If you are patient, when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace…  Because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps. 1 Peter 2:20-22

Jesus obeys the Father in order to maintain his eternal union with Him and the Holy Spirit.  Becoming human is just a way to show each of us how we, too, can maintain that union.  But we also did this through our union with Jesus.  For he, too, is God.

Patient suffering can only be maintained if we have a reason to suffer.  We do so to maintain our union with God. Be brave for behold, “I have overcome the world.”

Pope Benedict’s Visit to the USA
This Tuesday Pope Benedict will arrive in Washington, DC.  He will celebrate Mass in the stadium in Washington on Thursday morning.  Several priests of the archdiocese will be attending . I will be one of them.  I will only be gone two full days.  I come back Saturday morning.
The Pope has already issued a greeting to our country.  He will, as he always does, focus on Christ: His life, His mission, His Church.  Pope John Paul focused much on mankind: how we are made, how we interact with each other and how we experience God through Jesus in the philosophical sense.  That certainly served its purpose at an historical moment in time.  But now the new Pope will focus the world on salvation in Christ.  There is no hope without Christ.  There is no love without Christ.  There is no freedom without Christ.  We need this message more than ever at this moment in history.  There are many, as there were at the rise of communism, who are telling us we need to focus on the meaning of life in the material sense.  Many falsely believe that government entities can bring us this new salvation.  But just as Archbishop Fulton Sheen used to warn us, these are false claims.  They only feed the power of those who would mandate behavior and belief in others:  those who would take away your and my freedoms.  I have no doubt that what Pope Benedict will say this week will, in many ways, tend to these false notions which arise from the false belief that there is both no God and no life after physical death.  In other words, the balm of foolishness neither heals nor directs one toward healing.  Ergo, the need for Christ.

Please pay close attention to what Pope Benedict says and does in these next two weeks.  Please pray for him and for our priests that all of our travels are safe.

Our second graders, many at All Saints school, receive first Holy Communion next Sunday at St. Peter’s at 3 o’clock.  Please pray for them that they would always desire to receive the Holy Eucharist worthily always maintaining the true Catholic faith in their hearts, minds and in all acts of behavior and always be conscious of our Lord’s forgiveness.

     God Bless you,
    Fr. James Buckley, Pastor
