Saint Patrick Parish Bulletin
August 8, 2010 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly:  immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry.  Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self.”
    Colossians 3:1-2

August 8, 2010 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Those who prefer paganism to Christianity merely prefer to pursue physical and psychic pleasures over the life which Christ has witnessed and taught.  This is all self indulgence.
I am greedy when I make up fake Gods which justify my pursuing all sorts of pleasures with no accountability or limit.  I can do whatever my fake little God allows me to do.  And because I or someone likeminded is creating the little pagan image we can make it tell us to do anything we want.
Revelation from God is something else.  It comes from outside me and my friends.  I must submit to it because I am drawn to it by the hand of my creator.

From Our Pastor

500 Show Solidarity With Archbishop Lucas
Today (Sat, the 31st) around 500 people showed up to protest to planned opening of a Planned Parenthood Abortion Mill one block north of 92nd and Maple St.  In an ecumenical prayer vigil many offered prayers to God to have all good people of Omaha work to see that the clinic not open.     One poignant observation made was that when Planned Parenthood claims that the services it offers are needed by women in the area or in Omaha that all but one of those services is already provided adequately.   Many groups provide women’s health services.  The only “service” not provided is abortion.     Let us continue to pray and to act to end this most unholy and oftentimes silent distress on the young girls and women of Omaha.

Reek Sunday Draws 20,000
Last Sunday 20,000 pilgrims climbed Croagh Patrick Mountain in Ireland.  This 2500 foot conic mountain was the site of a 40-day retreat by St. Patrick in 441 A.D.  Each year on the lst Sunday of July the bishop of Tuam leads the pilgrimage up the rocky slopes.  Many go barefoot, go to confession and attend Mass at the top.  This type of penance, much practiced through history especially in Ireland, is invaluable to the individual as they abandon their concern for physical pleasure which strengthens their ability to choose only that which God wishes us to aspire to.

Eastern Michigan University Assaults Christianity
This last week a student at EMU lost her lawsuit and was removed from her graduate program in counseling.  The university demanded that she change her religious belief about the nature of human sexuality.  They told her she must take reorientation classes to change her belief and to attend gay pride day, etc.  The court upheld the action of the University.  Coming on the heels of several other decisions from courts we see a week by week dismantling of our beliefs by government.     This girl has been told she is not fit to counsel other human beings based on her Christian belief.  By that university’s standard, Archbishop Lucas, Archbishop Curtiss, Pope Benedict and myself are all unfit to counsel others about their self image and how they relate to the world and other people.  I hope you can see the path we are being led down.  I have been warning you for a long time about the atheistic secular view (which few hold) which is controlling events in our country solely by the force of government and law.     We must pray and act against this trend.  The next step beyond excluding Catholics from employment is the outlawing of preaching the gospel message in its fullness.  This is happening in other countries and with no protest will quickly manifest itself here.
The question is who do you trust?  Do you trust the academics and federal, state and city officials or do you trust your faith?  Do you trust Catholic universities who follow the same counseling protocols as Eastern Michigan?  As we read from Jeremiah this past week, if you are faithful to God’s work He will build a wall of brass to protect you.  Our faithfulness to God Himself will protect us for in our souls they cannot take away that which He has given us:  the sole desire to do His will.
Many of you are history buffs.  You may find it interesting to look up the definition of fascism.  Then look and see the past effects of it.  It is a very interesting topic.

Priests on Retreat Ths Week
One of the official diocesan retreats for priests is happening this week in Schuyler.  Please pray for those attending.  I will be at my annual retreat next week from Monday to Friday.  Please offer a prayer each day that I will be open to God’s movement in my intellect and will.  A presumptuous thank you.

The Feast of the Assumption is Sunday, August 15.
